Card 3: the midday lull non-trade
The third card earns nothing, and it is the one that protects the other two. Between the end of the European window and the arrival of the US numbers, the DAX offers perfect signals with no follow-through every day, and a trader who takes them gives back to the lull what he earned at the open.
Why the lull manufactures signals
Three reasons, seen through the course, add up between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm:
- Volume is a third of what it was at 9:30. An absorption requires someone to attack; when nobody attacks, a single passive participant is enough to manufacture a perfect absorption, with two reloads and an executed-to-displayed ratio of 3.
- Execution algos dominate. The day's VWAPs work their slices: steady volume, with no opinion, that draws imbalances and deltas with no directional meaning.
- Nobody confirms. A rejection at 9:40 is followed by dozens of participants positioning behind it. A rejection at 12:40 is followed by nobody, and price drifts the other way an hour later, with nothing in the book having announced it.
