FDAX: order flow on Eurex
A day in the DAX, Paris time
Three regimes in a single session
The NQ has, essentially, one regime per day: the US cash session from 3:30 pm to 10 pm Paris time, preceded by an overnight that is only a waiting room. The FDAX has three, and that is the first thing to understand before placing an order on the DAX.
The first regime is the European morning, from 9 am to about 2:30 pm: the DAX builds on its own flows, eurozone statistics, arbitrage on its 40 constituents, the positioning of the Frankfurt, London and Paris desks. The book is thinner than in the afternoon, but it is honest: the levels that form there form for endogenous reasons.
The second is the imported afternoon, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm: US data drops at 2:30 pm, the US cash market opens at 3:30 pm, and the DAX becomes largely a derivative of the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. The European book is crossed by a flow that has nothing to do with it.
The third is the derived evening, from 5:30 pm to 10 pm: the German cash market is closed, the future keeps trading, pulled by the United States, on a book that thins out while the range remains.
The FDAX day, Paris time (summer). Height gives the readability of the flow, not only volume: the 9 am to 10:30 am window and the 3:30 pm handover are the two moments when the book says something. The evening has range and almost no depth left.
The day, window by window
Times are Paris time. The Eurex session is defined in Frankfurt time, which is the same, and both switch clocks on the same day; the offset with New York, however, varies three weeks a year (module 6).
| Window | What happens | Flow readability |
|---|---|---|
| 2:10 am to 8 am | DAX night: Asian session, very thin book, often a narrow range | Low, barring news |
| 8 am to 9 am | Pre-open: European desks arrive, the 8 am German numbers drop | Rising |
| 9:00 am | Xetra opening auction: the first real price of the day | An event, not a read |
| 9 am to 10:30 am | The DAX window: morning extremes, sweeps, first walls | The best of the day |
| 10:30 am to 1 pm | Decline, then lull; the 10 am and 11 am European numbers make isolated spikes | Medium, then low |
| 1 pm | Xetra intraday auction | Reference |
| 1 pm to 2:30 pm | Midday lull: the market waits for the United States | The worst window for a setup |
| 2:30 pm | US statistics | Imported shock |
| 3:30 pm | US cash open: the DAX stops speaking German | Very good, but imported |
| 5:30 pm | Xetra closing auction, daily settlement of the future | Reference |
| 5:30 pm to 10 pm | Evening: range kept, depth lost | Poor, EUR 25 tick |
What this structure changes for a flow reader
Three practical consequences, which the following lessons develop one by one.
The morning's levels are tested in the afternoon under different conditions. That is the natural test the DAX offers you every day and the NQ does not: an absorption read at 11 am on a price is retested at 3:45 pm by an American flow that knows nothing about that price. If the same size comes back, you have a participant with a mandate. If it evaporates, it was European session liquidity.
The useful window is short. Between 9 am and 10:30 am, the book is both deep enough to be read and endogenous enough for your read to hold. Many experienced DAX traders only trade that window, then the 3:30 pm handover, and leave everything else.
The midday lull is a non-trade. Between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, the range contracts, execution algos nibble, order flow signals multiply with no follow-through. Module 7 makes it a card in its own right: knowing not to trade that window is worth more than a setup.
The FDAX session journal comments on these windows session by session, and the London session has its glossary entry. Reminder: educational content, past performance does not predict future results.
